As a non-binary and transgender MBA student and employee at the University of California, I’ve navigated the complex and often challenging world of higher education. My journey has not only been about acquiring knowledge and skills but also about advocating for a more inclusive and understanding environment for students like myself in higher education. I want to share some insights into the multifaceted challenges transgender students face in college, drawing from my personal experiences.

1. Battling Societal Stigma and Misunderstanding

One of the most significant hurdles I’ve faced is the societal stigma and lack of understanding about transgender identities. This manifests in several ways, from the struggle to have peers and faculty use the correct pronouns to the lack of gender-inclusive facilities. For instance, having only seen one gender-inclusive bathroom at UCLA Anderson was a poignant reminder of the emotional toll and isolation transgender students often endure in environments that are not fully accommodating. I don’t feel comfortable using gender-specific bathrooms, even though at times I have used both the men’s and women’s bathrooms.

2. Overcoming Institutional Barriers

Despite some progress, educational institutions still have a long way to go in fully embracing policies and practices supportive of transgender students. Gender-inclusive housing, appropriate health services, and administrative processes that respect gender identity are just a few areas where improvements are needed. The institutional barriers create an environment where transgender students must often fight to have their basic needs and identities recognized.

3. The Financial Strain

Transgender students frequently face additional financial challenges. In my case, I’ve had to take significant loans to fund my education. This financial burden is often heavier for transgender students who may not receive familial support due to their gender identity. The lack of specific scholarships for transgender students further exacerbates this issue, limiting access to crucial financial resources. The financial strain in addition to having to balance emotions due to lack of accommodations, is very stressful for transgender students.

4. Addressing Emotional and Mental Health Needs

The emotional labor involved in balancing academic responsibilities with one’s personal gender journey can be draining. Lack of education and understanding, and the constant need to advocate for oneself can significantly impact mental health and academic performance, adding to the already demanding college experience.

5. Future Uncertainties in the Workforce

Concerns about acceptance and inclusion in future workplaces add to the stress for transgender students. My ambition to consult with businesses to create safer workplaces for non-binary and trans individuals stems from this concern. The fear of discrimination in the workforce is a significant stressor that looms over the educational journey.

In Conclusion: A Call for Change

The challenges faced by transgender students in higher education are not insurmountable. However, they require a concerted effort from educational institutions, policymakers, and society at large to create more inclusive and supportive environments. My experiences at UCLA Anderson and as an employee at UCSF and beyond, have underscored the need for comprehensive support systems and inclusive policies.

As I continue my journey, advocating for inclusivity and understanding, I remain hopeful. Hopeful that the challenges we face today will pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable future in higher education and beyond.
